About This Plant

Sacred datura (Datura wrightii) is the white datura that grows wild along Southern California sidewalks and hillsides, a California native often called moonflower. Large, upward-facing white trumpet flowers, sometimes tinged lavender, open at dusk, perfume the evening air and close by late morning, from late spring until frost. It forms a low, sprawling mound of soft grey-green leaves 2 to 4 feet tall and wider than it is tall, followed by round, spiny seed pods. Very drought tolerant once established; give it full sun and lean, well-drained soil. A perennial in zones 7 to 10 that dies back in cold winters and regrows from its roots. Every part of the plant is highly poisonous if eaten; keep it away from children and pets.
