Simple tips for a thriving tree
Right Spot, Right Light
Morning sun with afternoon shade is ideal, especially in warmer zones (7+). In cooler zones, full sun is fine. Avoid harsh western exposure.
Well-Drained Soil
Japanese maples prefer slightly acidic, well-drained soil. Amend heavy clay with compost. Never let roots sit in waterlogged ground.
Water Deeply, Not Often
Established trees are fairly drought-tolerant. Water deeply once a week during dry spells. Mulch to retain moisture and keep roots cool.
Minimal Pruning
Prune lightly in late winter to remove dead or crossing branches. Japanese maples naturally develop beautiful form — less is more.
Wind Protection
Laceleaf varieties especially benefit from a sheltered spot. Strong winds can scorch delicate foliage and dry out leaves.
